PowerMate helps raise the temperature
Installation of a large number of boiler units in apartment blocks at a prestigious East London development has thrown up a number of logistical challenges for contractors.
Weighing 250kg and 2000mm high, Elson water heating system units, from plumbing equipment supplier PTS, were too heavy and awkward to be moved by hand.
Although goods lifts would carry equipment and materials to the different floors of the buildings, moving the boilers from delivery areas across the construction site’s uneven surfaces to the lifts was likely to prove difficult. Height restrictions on the lift doors themselves would further complicate matters. Elson asked Stanley Handling to come up with a solution that would ensure the safe, professional handling of its products and minimise the risk of accident or product damage.
A stringent evaluation process included ‘off site’ testing of a trial load using a PowerMate M2B powered stairclimber fitted with rough terrain wheels and pneumatic tyres. This, and the use of the unit’s ‘drop-down’ wheeled dolly, established that the full load could be easily transported across site with the minimum of manual handling effort and then tilted to permit loading into the builders’ lifts despite the limited clearance of the lift doors and the overall cabin dimensions. The order was duly placed with Stanley Handling and included certified training for all operators.
Since their introduction, the PowerMate M2Bs have exceeded expectations, providing a safe and productive handling solution.
