Meachers takes initiative as driver shortage bites

Following the introduction of a new scheme introduced by Derby based Meachers Global Logistics; the first two drivers have graduated from a novel HGV driver upgrade scheme.

The Initiative by Meachers Global Logistics employs Class 2 drivers then facilitates and funds the process through to class 1 status. 

Meachers has partnered with training firm S-G Transport Training & Logistics and specialist transport recruitment firm JT Recruit, to identify drivers with a current HGV 2 license and offer them the opportunity to undergo full professional training to achieve their HGV 1 license. 

The industry leading training course, would normally cost up to £2,000.

Commenting on the training programme, Mark Caswell said: “The offer of free training with a guaranteed job at the end presented an excellent opportunity for me. The course only took 5 days to complete, but it has now given me the skills I need to take my career to the next level driving HGV class 1 vehicles.”

Commercial Director at Meachers Global Logistics, Gary Whittle, said: “Derby is an important hub for the transport sector and we expect to see continued growth in this area in 2015. We are hoping that this new scheme will encourage those people who are already working in the industry to consider a career driving our fleet of modern class 1 HGV vehicles.
