Two dimensional codes
E-fulfilment specialist James and James has developed a new dimension to its business as it has prepared for the roll-out of the Royal Mail’s new 2D barcode system.
Based on the now familiar 2D code format, the new codes will be applied by James and James to all UK and International Royal Mail parcel services, including parcels and large letter format. E-retail clients of James and James will be able to track the delivery status of their consignments automatically through the ControlPort real-time software system.
Deliveries taking longer than expected can be flagged up and customers alerted. Royal Mail’s delivery performance will be trackable over time, allowing James and James to advise their e-retail customers on appropriate lead times to quote to their end customers.
“As this exciting new implementation progresses, our clients will be among the first to benefit from the new trackability it provides”, said James Hyde, operations director of James and James. “Our ControlPort software already provides a highly trackable solution, and the introduction of these 2D codes gives us even more information to help expedite and track problems with despatches.”
The new codes, printed by thermal transfer printing at James and James’ facilities, are highly robust and readable under even adverse conditions. Since October, Royal Mail has begun to scan the 2D barcodes at key points in their network.
