Employee wellbeing: proactive support for better productivity
The UK loses around 131 million working days a year because of ill health*, but faced with backlogs in the NHS, and the rising cost of living, what can logistics businesses do to help workers struggling with physical, mental or financial health and wellbeing? David McCormack, CEO of HIVE360, investigates.

THE CHANCELLOR has warned the UK economy is set to get worse before it gets better, and many businesses already navigating supply chain challenges and the rising cost of doing business, are looking to save money and maximise productivity.
Recent research (the Joseph Rowntree Foundation) revealed that almost one third of workers – approximately 8.2 million people – said they experienced low work productivity due to financial concerns, whilst a ProGlove-commissioned survey of warehouse and logistics workers, finds that 42% highlight exhaustion and fatigue as significant challenges every day.
With the labour market experiencing continuing shortages, there is a clear and present need for businesses to prioritise worker health and wellbeing, and in turn, build efficiency and productivity.
Organisations looking to do so by using cost effective resources and tech to help workers manage soaring living costs, should find out how employee benefits make a difference, optimise talent attraction and retention strategies, and employee engagement and productivity levels.
Recent enhancements to the financial, health and wellbeing support available via the HIVE360 customisable employee benefits app Engage, include access to a host of health and financial resources, information and support. The changes are the latest step in our drive to build on customer experience, data and offerings for clients, and provide the most needed support to their workers, inside and outside the workplace.
Included are financial wellbeing features and solutions, from debt and money management guidance to payroll information, payslips, Health and Life Insurance.
Among the support for employee wellness strategies is the app’s ability to integrate several clinically proven counselling approaches to support employees – from everyday mental wellbeing needs to individual critical incident support where necessary. This includes an online GP appointment booking system, and six face-to-face counselling sessions per ‘episode’ for every user, at no extra cost.
The enhancements also enable insights into how employees’ use Engage. The app provides anonymised data on the services, benefits and resources their workforce is most often using, to deliver information that employers can use to help inform the wider business strategy, employee training and development programmes, comprehensive employee support, and business continuity planning.
