Safer Logistics Seminar Programme updated
The Health & Safety Event provides the perfect networking and educational opportunity to anyone responsible for running a safe and efficient workplace, anywhere in the UK.
The Safer Logistics Seminar Theatre is a key part of the Health & Safety Event, focusing on a wide variety of logistics safety hot spots from loading bay drive-aways to managing forklift operators and identifying risks in road transport.
The event takes place at Birmingham’s NEC from March 21-23.
The seminar programme is below. You can register free to attend on the event website – www.healthandsafetyevents.co.uk
Tuesday March 21
11:45 – 12:15 Warehouse safety barriers – A-Safe
12:40 – 13:10 Safe transport is good business – Nina Day, senior engineer, Health & Safety Laboratory
In 2013, DVSA introduced a new national enforcement approach for load securing. Nina will talk about the reasoning behind the enforcement approach, the issues being seen at the roadside, where responsibility for safe loading lies in the transport chain, and how companies can address the most common contributory factors to road and workplace injuries and fatalities occurring as a result of loading and securing issues.
13:25 – 13:55 The growth of telematics and how it can boost your forklift safety – Paul Stokes, Sales Training & Product Development Manager, Toyota Material Handling UK
Paul will be discussing the continuing growth of telematics and how it can improve safety in your operation. He will be focusing on the Toyota I_Site system and its benefits; fleet optimisation, impact reduction, controlled access, pre-operational checks and the overall creation of a safety culture. Alongside this he will also be discussing the benefits of forkless environments and how tow tractors can be a safer alternative for moving and distributing goods.
14:10 – 14:40 The Importance of FLT pre-use inspections – Nick Welch, Head of Technical Services, RTITB
A crucial element of safe forklift truck operation is conducting proper pre-use inspections. According to the HSE, over 18% of lift truck incidents occur as a result of mechanical failure. Incidents of mechanical failures can be dramatically reduced through correct completion of a pre-use inspection. Nick Welch, RTITB Technical Director, will discuss the typical incidents that occur within the workplace and the quick judgments we are all guilty of making when we deem something as safe or unsafe. In addition Nick will look at the importance of operators completing pre-use inspections and how failure to do so can be a main contributor to incidents in the workplace.
Nick will also explore the suggestion that the cause of poor pre-use inspections may be less to do with a general disregard for its importance, and more because operators do not possess the knowledge required to complete pre-use checks accurately.
Wednesday March 22
11:45 – 12:15 Warehouse safety barriers – A-Safe
12:40 – 13:10 Safety in an Automated Age – Peter Harvey, CEO, The Fork Lift Truck Association, with Stuart Taylor, MD of Mentor Training
Automation is viewed by many as offering a genuine opportunity to reduce fork lift related accidents by removing humans from the handling equation. However, for many SMEs, it will be impractical and unattainable. Instead management has got to up its game if we are to reverse the trend of rising fork lift truck accidents. Peter and Stuart examine these issues and discuss the tools you need to rise to the challenge.
14:10 – 14:40 Warehouse logistics and vehicle rollovers. What is the connection? – Andrew Drewary CMILT, on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport
Andrew will discuss a vehicle rollover incident, the safety issues that ensue and how such incidents can be prevented.
The areas coming under scrutiny being:
• Security of the load on the vehicle
• Risk assessments of the loading/unloading process
• Training of all warehouse/driving staff in:
all aspects of loading/unloading and stowage;
the correct use of load restraints/securing devices
• Driver training on the security of the load during transit.
Thursday March 23
11:45 – 12:15 The importance of maintenance on forklift safety – Paul Mulcahy, Quality, Safety & Environmental Manager, Toyota Material Handling UK
Forklift trucks and warehouse equipment can be a real danger in the workplace. Paul will be using his wealth of experience to discuss what these dangers are and what operators and leaders can do to improve safety in their operation. He will focus on the importance of legislation, servicing of trucks, best practice and training to ensure a safe working environment.
12:40 – 13:10 Delivering in the Dark (training HGV drivers for night time deliveries) – Richard Brewer, National Register of LGV Instructors Manager, RTITB
With an ever growing demand for next day deliveries and an industry striving to meet increasing customer needs, night time deliveries are becoming an absolute necessity. Night time deliveries come with a wealth of benefits for haulage firms and customers alike; including reduced journey times, lower fuel consumption, and less congestion.
But night time deliveries do not come without challenges – noise pollution, lone working and the dangers of low-lit areas are but a few considerations that need to be explored before putting drivers out on the dark road.
During his discussion, Richard Brewer will explore both the benefits and challenges of night time deliveries. He’ll be asking how the risks can be reduced and ultimately, if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
