Budget retailer maximises space in transit

Poundworld has developed a space-saving trailer which will see the retailer deliver 25% more pallets a year between its DC and satellite sites.

Poundworld approached Jon Wilcock for Cartwright to design and build a bespoke double deck curtainside trailer with a tapered design allowing for smaller items to be packed towards the front, with taller pallets loaded at the rear, using the available space as efficiently as possible. The challenge was to produce a trailer that could utilise the existing fleet of standard height tractor units.

National transport manager for Poundworld, Mark Heathershaw, applauded the new designs: “We are delighted. Just shows that with determination and thinking outside the box, nothing is impossible.”

The new trailers will join Poundworld’s fleet of 100 trailers. The organisation currently has 7000 employees at its 358 stores serving over two million customers with 11 million products a week and has plans for further expansion over the next five years.

With the new trailers, Poundworld will see 25% more pallets delivered a year between their 500,000sq. ft head office and distribution centre at Normanton, West Yorkshire and satellite sites in Scotland, Bristol and London.

Mark added: “The driving experience of the Cartwright trailers is much better than a standard double decker. Our drivers are very happy. What a stunning trailer it is.”
