Milton Keynes DC achieves carbon neutral status

Posted on Monday 29 July 2024

THE FACILITY is operated by Daimler Truck UK and its logistics partner XPO Logistics.

The certification covers the 140,000 sq ft distribution centre, which opened in 2022, and the domestic UK distribution of aftersales parts.

XPO Logistics managing director—UK and Ireland Dan Myers, says: “This certification demonstrates what can be achieved when two businesses with shared values come together to tackle a problem. It is just one step on our journey together to build a more sustainable future.”

Richard Skidmore, director—customer service and parts at Daimler Truck UK, said: “We take carbon emissions seriously, and working with XPO Logistics means we have a partner that is completely aligned with our business culture. This has allowed both of us to work effectively to achieve carbon neutral status at this site, and we will continue to work on further reducing our emissions where we can.”

How it was achieved

Carbon Neutral Britain awarded the certificate to the site last June, following a close collaboration between XPO Logistics and Daimler Truck UK. Initiatives to control emissions included building the site to BREEAM Excellent rating; supplying green energy to complement on-site renewable energy generation via the solar array; controlling all material flows on site, thus minimising waste; reusing resources wherever possible; achieving high rates of packaging materials segregation and high rates of recycling at the site; harvesting rainwater to reduce demand on water resources; enhancing biodiversity with bee-hives on site, land left to rewild, and natural attenuation ponds; sustainable travel plans available to all colleagues to minimise road journeys while incentivising walking and cycling; and installing lighting systems using the latest LED and zoning control technologies.
