More options than you think

Logistics offers more varied and valuable ways into the industry than you might think, including degree apprenticeships, says Richard Atkinson.

SUPPLY CHAINS have never been more important, or in the public eye. Highly visible throughout the pandemic, supply chains have kept the nation moving, not least by the vital support to the NHS. Meanwhile, in the violent aggression by Russia against Ukraine, we see a 'battle of supply chains' every night on our news feeds.
While there are many fine leaders in logistics, there is a now keen move to formalise logistics with professional practice degrees. All companies in England, with a payroll of over £3 million, pay 0.5% of that amount as a levy to government to fund apprenticeships. Companies may then draw down on the levy to fund apprenticeships. It’s a great opportunity for employers to educate, train and invest in their people, improving performance, innovation and retention.
It also provides another route for school leavers, to join a company that is offering degree apprenticeships. Thereby enjoying both university and having a first job with a clear career ahead.
Aston University was the first to deliver degree apprenticeships and is the UK’s leading logistics faculty. We are delighted to offer degree apprenticeships at BSc and at Post Graduate Diploma level, which, with a modest personal contribution, can lead to a MSc in Supply Chain Leadership.
Logistics has largely been a male dominated industry, and arguable the worse for it – lacking in diversity of thought which begets reduced levels of innovation. Since the introduction of Aston's Degree Apprenticeship BSc in Supply Chain Management, in 2020, intake has doubled year-on-year. And the female percentage is now 56%. The future is bright – we just need to get there quicker!
Aston University is partnered with many leading companies for their logistics learning needs, including DHL, Coca-Cola, JLR, GSK, CEVA Logistics, Mondelez and many more. Bringing together colleagues from different companies, with varied experience and backgrounds further forges powerful networks for life for course members. It also adds to diversity of thought to fuel vital innovation.
If ever there is an era of supply chain, it is now! Supply chain, logistics and warehousing roles are fast-moving, problem-solving, people-centric and highly rewarding. Becoming a professional leader of supply chain with a professional degree apprenticeship is surely a great way forward to an important role in an exciting sector.
