Reducing plastic waste has been a hot topic in the UK media for over a year now – ever since the BBC first aired David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II exposing the destructive effect single-use plastic is having on our environment.

Both UK government and businesses have been compelled to take action. As a result initiatives to reduce or eliminate the consumption of single-use plastic are gaining momentum.

In his Autumn Budget, Chancellor Philip Hammond confirmed that a new tax would be introduced from 1 April 2022 on produced or imported plastic packaging that does not include at least 30% recycled plastic. The Budget also outlined plans for a £20 million investment to tackle plastics and boost recycling, including research and development into new packaging materials and smarter plastic packaging waste management.

This was swiftly followed last October by 250 major brands vowing to eliminate all single-use plastics from their operations and invest in new technology so all packaging could be recycled by 2025 – a move described by the United Nations as the most ambitious effort yet to fight plastic pollution.

Last year the Environment Agency certified Goplasticpallets.com as an Accredited Exporter of plastic packaging waste. Just one year on, we have set ourselves the ambitious target of recycling 350 tonnes of plastic waste from customers’ used plastic pallets and boxes by the end of 2019.

Currently 96% of the plastic pallets we supply are made from recycled materials. Just 4% are produced from virgin material which is recommended for ultra-hygienic environments, for instance some food and pharmaceutical products.
