Centralised operations

13 November 2020

Retailer centralises operations in bid to conquer complexities of eComm fulfilment.

German tableware manufacturer WMF has optimised its logistics processes due to consolidation to a self-managed logistics location. The group relies on a system of software and automation solutions from Körber to drive optimisation in concert with WMF Group’s broader logistics ecosystem.

Five years ago, the company selected Körber’s WMS for the same 40,000 DC.

Körber Supply Chain CEO Dirk Hejna says: “Today’s supply chain demands highly integrated solutions because businesses must be able to adapt in an instant. Being able to add in new, emerging technology to solve both broader challenges – such as adjusting for Peak and building new facilities – or day-to-day tasks like changing a customer’s order before it leaves the warehouse or re-routing it once in transit.”

Körber provided and integrated a fully automated shuttle system, and more than a dozen additional work stations for goods-to-person and shipping processes. Planning and management of goods will continue to be centrally managed with the K.Motion WMS. All of this was achieved without any interruption to ongoing operations. As a result, the WMF Group significantly simplified its supply chain operations, offers distributors better service and strengthens the competitiveness of its consumer business.

With Körber, WMF also conquered challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The retail industry had hardly seen a comparable increase of online orders before. The shift in order structures paralleled the go live of the enhanced logistics capacities in Dornstadt.

AGENDA

The "New normal" AMRs in a time of disruption

The 2020 pandemic has brought significant changes to logistics industry worldwide. Whether these adjustments are viewed as challenges or opportunities, they all point to one realisation: there’s no going back. As companies work through these shifts, one thing is clear – fulfillment robots are adding stability and productivity to a bursting supply chain.

Saving space and boosting productivity

The unstoppable rise of e-commerce has not only led to an increased demand for warehousing but also packaging. Martin McVicar, MD of forklift manufacturer Combilift, explains how the company’s products have enabled a major packaging supplier to optimise its warehouse space whilst keeping up with its ever growing production schedule.

Do the detail in eFulfillment

D2C was a growing trend before the pandemic knocked out much of the High Street for months on end. The growth of D2C makes warehouse process accuracy more important than ever. But many retailers and brands think buying a system to cope is enough. Nick Fox, Head of Logistics - Europe, at fashion retailer Theory argues that the real work is ‘doing the detail’ and making sure IT and warehouse operations knit together effectively.
