Toolbox Talk on fall-protection equipment

IPAF CEO Peter Douglas says: “These Toolbox Talks are already being used enthusiastically by managers and supervisors on a whole range of sites They are a simple way for employers to get simple safety messages across.

“IPAF is committed to delivering a range of Toolbox Talks to complement the Andy Access series of posters and all are free for anyone to download. IPAF recommends that all those overseeing temporary work at height using powered access review and download the posters and presentations. They are short and to the point and only take a few minutes to deliver. These should be used on a daily or weekly basis to reinforce key safety messages.

“Complacency and overfamiliarity with a task can be a danger in every workplace, so by introducing new topics you can ensure safety briefings stay fresh and help to concentrate minds. Even experienced operators will benefit from being reminded of the safety basics that sometimes get forgotten or overlooked during a busy working day.”

First wave

The first wave of apprentices on a new route to certifying specialist MEWP technicians have been celebrated by representatives of the IPAF as they embarked on their studies at North Warwickshire & South Leicestershire College.

The Level 3 Lift Truck and Powered Access Technician apprenticeship forms part of IPAF’s Roadmap to Qualified MEWP Technician or Engineer Status, which meets growing demand in the hire and maintenance industry. The first intake of eight apprentices was confirmed earlier this year.

Two further intakes are planned for Q4 2021, which means there are more than 30 apprentices already in pipeline. Employers that take on an apprentice of any age by September 2021 will benefit from a £3,000 payment in addition to the £1,000 already provided for organisations that recruit apprentices aged 16 to 18, or those aged under 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan.

CAP programme

The Competent Assessed Person (CAP) programme from the IPAF has been adapted to suit those inspecting or maintaining mast-climbing work platforms (MCWPs) and construction hoists, including goods hoists, transport platform hoists and passenger hoists.

During 2020 and early 2021, IPAF’s Training Department has worked to adapt the course to suit those inspecting and maintaining MCWPs and hoists, in response to growing demand across the industry for a recognised programme to certify individuals as having the skills to inspect and examine the equipment as per the legal requirements of national and international safe-use standards.
