Regular re-training a must for Pyroban
Safety company Pyroban is reminding explosion proof forklift users and suppliers about the need for correct servicing in accordance with the handbook to maintain safety.
An explosion proof conversion of a forklift ensures it is safe in a potentially explosive atmosphere at first use. However, to counteract the risks posed by inevitable wear and tear, a system of preventative maintenance should be put in place to ensure equipment continues to be safe, and is regularly serviced by an engineer trained to work on the specific explosion proof system.
All maintenance, whether planned or unplanned, requires specialist knowledge and a full understanding of explosion protection, so work on a Pyroban system should always be done by a Pyroban trained engineer. Engineers must retrain every two years to keep their expertise up to date and minimise safety risks when working on site.
"Companies are often working under time pressures and in the event of a problem with a truck, might be tempted to try a quick fix with any available engineer," says Darren Boiling, group after sales manager.
"However, even small changes by an untrained engineer can compromise the whole safety system, and in turn the safety of the whole site."
To help ensure truck owners and operators can receive a quick response to any service issues, Pyroban trains forklift dealers' engineers to carry out the service and maintenance of the explosion proof trucks. In addition, Pyroban's own specialist engineers are available should an engineer require additional help and support.
"Maintaining or repairing a safety system may sometimes incur additional time and cost, but we want organisations and truck users to remember that not checking the credentials of a service engineer, or not servicing adapted equipment adequately can pose a serious threat to safety. Companies that do not use qualified engineers to conduct safety checks are also risking their reputation and could face serious legal implications in the event of an incident," explains Boiling.
"Using specially trained engineers is just one step towards ensuring safety. Forklift owners should also make sure that their equipment and systems are always operated and serviced in accordance with the handbook to maintain safety."
