SEMA unveils Safety Conference plans

SEMA, the Storage Equipment Manufacturers’ Association is to hold its Annual Safety Conference and Exhibition on Thursday 3rd of November at the National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull.

Ten speakers cover current statutory and generic product related topics illustrated by case study material on the theme of “Safety in the Storage Industry: Meeting Customers’ Expectations”.

Nina Day, Senior Engineer, Health and Safety Laboratory says that by applying PUWER, the safe and effective storage and transportation of goods can deliver improved efficiency and fewer costs for business.

Neil Sheehan, Safety, Health and Environmental Manager for ASDA Stores Ltd discusses how the retailer has embraced and implemented the revised CDM Regulations into a diverse retail construction work stream, covering racking and maintenance.

Phil Ganner, Safety Specialist, SpanSet Ltd is to put safety first by introducing the very latest PPE technology for installation engineers. He will explain how PPE suppliers have worked closely with SEMA, its SEIRS installers and affiliates to continuously improve safety on site.

Weetabix has around 1200 people working at its biscuit, cereal bar and wheat cleaning operations. Their Health and Safety Advisor, Karen Wheeler talks about how the brand has successfully implemented a top down/bottom up approach in changing the safety culture of the business.

Terry Mallard, Health and Safety Inspector, Birmingham City Council says; “Yes, we’ve got the power but we’re also here to help and to advise. So, exactly how do Local Authority inspectors work with the storage industry, deploying their powers to maintain fair and robust regulations? 

Dagan Hyde, Commercial Design Manager, Link 51 shows how competiveness is not just about Price per Pallet on day one. With ROI top of mind, a well-designed racking system built to SEMA Codes of Practice offers longevity so you can access products at the right time, goods remain merchandisable and staff can work in a safe environment.

John Lewis recognises that keeping pace in retail means that flexibility storage practices is essential. Andrew Noble, their Warehouse Safety Co-ordinator explains how the human factor needs to be managed in order to overcome potential safety issues. Matching competent operatives to specific tasks is critical to a safe, efficient operation.

Cantilever racking is utilised across almost every aspect of the distribution chain. Steve Cowen of SEMA’s Technical Committee will review the latest developments on the safe storage of metal, long products and heavy goods with a focus on cantilever racking and the variety of materials stored.

How does Travis Perkins Plc manage its Racking Inspection schedule and subsequent maintenance programme across a constantly evolving and large multi-branded estate?  Helen Ballard, Group Racking Maintenance Manager, Travis Perkins Plc explains.

Working with the government’s new Regulatory Delivery directorate, wine, beer and spirits distributor, Matthew Clark has implemented a single system of compliance and regulation across its 12 UK sites. Risk and Compliance Manager, Simon Ambridge and Ellie Griffiths, Primary Authority Manager at Eastleigh Borough Council explains how these protocols embrace SEMA codes and guidelines and help to control incidents and meet statutory requirements.
