CILT: CSR good for transport

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport has welcomed yesterday's statement by the Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond regarding the continued go-ahead for road and bus improvement schemes.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport has welcomed yesterday's statement by the Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond regarding the continued go-ahead for road and bus improvement schemes.

CILT says that it is greatly encouraged by the Government's positive recognition of the links between transport investment and economic growth.

CILT Chief Executive Steve Agg says: "Although we recognise that in these difficult times transport has to bid for Government investment alongside other key sectors, we are pleased that the Secretary of State has been able to retain so many important schemes, both nationally and locally.

"Transport is not just an end in itself but makes a clear and vital contribution to the economic and efficient movement of goods and people across the national spectrum.

"Philip Hammond has said that transport remains a 'priority' for the Government and that it is vital in 'securing the UK's long term prosperity'. This represents a practical and welcome recognition of the role and importance of transport to the nation's welfare."

Mr Agg also welcomed the statement by Labour Shadow Transport Secretary Maria Eagle that transport investment was 'critical' for supporting industry and rebalancing the economy.

He said: "CILT is heartened by the outcome that transport has achieved from the Comprehensive Spending Review. We look forward to a close dialogue with Mr Hammond and the Government in order to identify and determine the most expedient and rewarding areas for future investment."
