FTA focusing on driver shortage at Tory Party Conference
29 September 2014
The Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham will provide the stage for the Freight Transport Association (FTA) and Transport Hub to showcase key debates in transport policy.
With FTA members regularly voicing their increased concerns over the problem of driver shortage, the subject will be discussed in detail as part of FTA’s own fringe event at the party conference on Tuesday (30 September).
As part of the event entitled ‘Transforming transport – securing and supporting the next generation of employees’, the challenges facing the freight industry without enough professional drivers in the UK will be outlined, and possible ways of solving the problem will be discussed.
Karen Dee, FTA’s Director of Policy said: "FTA members are telling us of their real concerns over the lack of professional drivers in the UK. The driver shortage obviously affects freight operators and it is clear that it is becoming increasingly difficult to source drivers who have the necessary training to deliver the goods.”
Now in its fifth consecutive year, the Transport Hub sees FTA join forces with an eclectic coalition of eight other transport organisations from across the breadth of transport opinion to host the Transport Hub events at the 2014 party conferences.
Karen Dee, FTA’s Director of Policy said: "Throughout the 2014 party conferences the Transport Hub will once again be putting transport in the political spotlight, attracting leading political and industry figures as well as conference delegates and others to discuss the issues affecting the movement of people and goods. FTA is proud of the leading role it has played in the organisation of the Transport Hub, and looks forward to another highly successful party conference season.”
The diverse and interesting Transport Hub programme of events will bring together party members, transport professionals, journalists and politicians at the three main party annual conferences.
The Transport Hub will take place at:
Conservative Party Conference - 28 September-1 October, Birmingham
Liberal Democrat Conference - 4-8 October, Glasgow
Transport Hub will host events at the Conservative and Liberal Democrat conferences, ranging from interviews with the top figures in each party on the transport plans they will put to the country in 2015.
