Innovation centre seeks partner for Internet of Things development

28 January 2015

Scotland’s manufacturers and logistics companies are being given the opportunity to improve processes and efficiencies by harnessing the potential of the Internet of Things.

To mark its one year anniversary, CENSIS, the Innovation Centre for Sensor and Imaging Systems, has launched a national campaign to find a company partner.

The six month project will give the selected business:

  • access to the CENSIS team,
  • its project management skills,
  • and industry experienced engineers to the value of £85,000, which can be employed to develop or improve business processes.

The potential applications are numerous and varied, ranging from automation in factories and energy management, to predictive maintenance and product customisation.

Ian Reid, chief executive of CENSIS, said: "This presents a real opportunity for a Scottish business, or an international company with operations in Scotland, to pioneer a project that could help it cut costs, improve competitiveness, and ultimately boost its bottom line.”

Scotland is home to a rich engineering research base, which could help businesses translate potential innovations into reality. The country’s sensor sector alone generates estimated revenues of £2.6 billion with 170 companies employing about 16,000 people.

Since its establishment in January last year, CENSIS has helped bring a number of companies and universities together on very different projects. This has included FTSE-listed Optos and Glasgow University, both of which are working together on a project which aims to increase the scope and image quality of scanning laser ophthalmoscope lenses.
