Safety drives decision to buy mobile loading platform
25 April 2018
The UK distribution centre for American skincare company Dermalogica has installed a bespoke mobile loading platform, designed and manufactured by Thorworld Industries.
The unit was supplied by Thorworld’s agent, Darmax UK at the DC which handles US manufactured stock, which is imported to the UK on pallets within 40ft containers.
The facility functions without a dedicated loading dock, and has to-date, achieved safe loading and unloading practice through operators accessing the back of containers with pallet trucks. While regular training has consistently been provided to the distribution centre team, the Dermalogica UK team felt recently that more could be done to further heighten staff safety, and prevent stock damage.
With safety as his main priority, Karl Tiplady, Dermalogica’s warehouse assistant manager, has driven an ‘improved loading solution’ project from the Dermalogica side; taking on a programme of research to ascertain the most appropriate equipment for the site.
“When I started researching the options, I was looking for a lightweight solution,” he explains, “one that would fit the space we had available in the yard, and deliver complete stability. We researched the market carefully, and found that most ramp systems would be too large for the space we had to work within.
“We then discovered Thorworld, and realised that the firm could create a platform measuring 2.5m x 2.5m. This lightweight loading and unloading apparatus could be bespoke and designed to suit our exact requirements.
“By seeing an image of a Thorworld platform through a Google search, we knew that this particular solution would be ideal for our needs.”
Fitted with height adjustable legs and castors, together with a gas spring safety barrier, cat ladder with safety barrier, and an anti-slip grit finish platform area, the new equipment has exceeded Karl’s safety heightening expectations.
“Already, the difference the new platform has made is terrific,” he continues. “It’s been in use for over a month now, and really is an impressive piece of equipment, manufactured to an excellent quality standard. It’s proven itself to be superbly designed and very easy to use.
“What’s more, the apparatus is extremely sturdy; a factor which gives us confidence that safety concerns will not present an issue.”
Karl goes on to say how helpful he found the design and sales team both at Thorworld and Darmax, and that the platform itself was delivered on time.
“I found the sales staff friendly and knowledgeable, and I would happily recommend their services, platform quality and capabilities to anyone in our situation,” he concludes.
Ian Langan, technical and engineering director at Thorworld, was delighted to learn how pleased Karl and the operating team are with the platform, and the overall project.
“It’s great to hear that the equipment we’ve supplied has completely met Dermalogica UK’s brief. Increasing safety provision in the loading bay with apparatus that’s purpose designed for the job, even when current processes are functioning, is an astute move for any loading operation. We’re pleased Dermalogica has chosen to upgrade its solution and wish the team a safe and efficient loading future.”
