Automotive supplier Multimatic maximises space

03 July 2018

Following a strategic move to lower its facilities costs at its UK headquarters, Multimatic has invested in a temporary building from Spaciotempo that will be in use for at least the next decade.

As a global supplier to the automotive industry, Multimatic needs extensive space to manufacture high volume parts for mainstream automotive manufacturers. Its business includes composites engineering, components, mechanisms and body/chassis structures.

The decision to use Spaciotempo’s temporary buildings follows a cost saving exercise. To bring costs down, Multimatic has moved from a warehouse they were renting to accommodate materials, and instead bought a high specification warehouse from Spaciotempo.

The warehouse will be in use for at least the next 15 years, and will reduce storage costs significantly vs. a rented warehouse.

Racking key

A key requirement of the project was being able to install racking for storage, as Multimatic stores wide varieties of materials and components for use in manufacturing as well as finished parts for customers. The company required a tall building to maximise storage space and ensure the warehousing facility would continue running smoothly.

Spaciotempo supplied and installed a 20m by 50m building from its leading Neivalu range. The building includes an 8m eave that is unobstructed in height, which allows racking to be installed from floor to ceiling. In total, the new building provides an extra 1,000 sq m of warehousing space.

To also ensure that the building will withstand the robust, heavy-duty activity taking place within, solid gables and Armco were fitted to the building. Armco is a very pure soft iron and is widely used in roadside crash barriers. The building also features a wide roller shutter door for vehicle access, and a thermo roof to retain heat and prevent condensation effecting the stored items.

Paul Cleaver, assistant general manager of Multimatic, said: “Spaciotempo’s  ability to provide a building with an unobstructed apex really won us over.

“The new solution gives us more than enough storage space, and the floor-to-ceiling racking is a great feature for our logistics team.”

To show Multimatic the size and scale of buildings that Spaciotempo could produce, Adam Thomas, Area Sales Manager for Spaciotempo who led the project, invited Multimatic to see Spaciotempo’s other buildings.

The building was then drawn up by Spaciotempo’s CAD designers so that Multimatic could view the layout of its buildings. After approving the drawings, the building itself took 19 days to manufacture and install at the site.
