Big truck potential
Hyster has announced the electrification of its line of Hyster Big Trucks is in development. This activity paves the way for zero-emission, fuel-cell versions of heavy duty trucks.
Initial introductions are likely to be based on lithium-ion batteries. However, through its relationship with Nuvera Fuel Cells, Hyster expects that implementation of hydrogen fuel-cell engines will be achieved in the next phase. Hydrogen fuel cells may allow for rapid refueling, increased productivity, and longer run time between refills.
Nuvera’s experience developing fuel-cell engines for Class I, II, and III lift trucks and other types of vehicles can be applied to zero-emission, high-capacity equipment such as container handlers.
“In many port applications, fuel cells offer the potential for significant benefits and performance. For example, the ability to power equipment for an entire shift without refilling and maintaining the fueling characteristics of diesel are very attractive elements to terminal operators,” says Gus Block, director of marketing and corporate development for Nuvera.
