Boost plant productivity & safety

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

In a tough environment, essential plant machinery like balers and feed conveyors, tying heads and other MRF plant have to be built to last. With machines in constant use and so many abrasive materials often breakdowns and malfunctions can occur.

As margins are slim, any downtime can be very costly with men and machines idle and your yard quickly filling up. For a trouble-free operation after regular servicing, Middleton Engineering recommends:

• Baler training when the machine is first installed and refresher training at regular intervals to correct bad habits and where staff turnover is fluid.

• Correct operation to ensure machinery isn’t abused or over stressed, e.g. not over filling the baler to ensure components last longer.

• Cleaning is the best preventative maintenance that you can carry out – especially on tying heads to avoid increased wear.

• Availability of spare parts – especially problematic if you buy from abroad and need to wait for specialist parts to be shipped before repairs can be carried out. Middleton’s policy is to build a set of spares matched for each baler so it can rectify issues within 24hrs.

• Simple servicing and safety checks, including lubrication and visual checks for obvious signs of wear, especially leaking hydraulics or seals.
