Dedicate a day to improve safety and compliance

Posted on Friday 1 January 2010

According to figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the food and drink industry incurred costs and fines of over £270,000 in 2015 for preventable incidents involving forklift trucks, telehandlers and lorries, affecting the lives of countless individuals.

The statistics also show that within the UK manufacturing and logistics sector, 17% of workplace accidents occur within the food and drink sector.

The first priority for any business should always be safety for employees, and legally, workplace transport operations need to be safe. To tackle this problem RTITB is encouraging food and drink manufacturers to dedicate just one day in 2016 to making their business safer and more efficient with a HealthCheck. With a holistic evaluation of the workplace transport within an organisation, an RTITB HealthCheck can help businesses to improve their processes and their bottom line, while reducing risks and increasing safety.

Accidents do happen in the food and drink sector and without an independent viewpoint it can be hard to identify where systems, processes and practical operation might be posing risks to staff.  A HealthCheck can help identify these issues, while aiding an organisation’s compliance with the required legislation.

To find out how your business could benefit, download RTITB’s free self-assessment tool – Do you need a HealthCheck?.

You can also learn more about how recent incidents in food and drink businesses could have been avoided and compare the cost of fines versus the price of prevention in RTITB’s dedicated Case Study.
