Get your motor running… but not too hard
Energy efficiency is a well-established pillar of sustainability – but are you always on the look out for energy efficient products? Interroll’s UK country manager Hilton Campbell suggest you should be.

INTERROLL HAS long placed energy efficiency high in its priority list. The manufacturer is a pioneer of energy-efficient conveying components and systems.
Interroll UK country manager Hilton Campbell explains: “Energy efficiency and sustainability in terms of the materials we are using are key priorities when we are developing new products.
“I wouldn’t say at this stage it is giving us a differentiator, it’s more our responsibility as a global player.”
For example, Interroll has been promoting a 24V product and a platform based on DC rather than AC for a number of years, because it yields lower power consumption.
When it comes to the climate protection measures to which the international community is committed, many people first think of the further expansion of renewable energies, which are intended to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But the goal of limiting the rise in the average global temperature can only be achieved if energy efficiency is significantly improved at the same time.
Interroll’s first ESG report, rebased at the end of last year, elaborates: “Electric motors — such as those used in conveyor and sorting systems in material flow solutions — have an important role to play here, as there are around eight billion electric motors in use in the EU, consuming almost 50% of the electricity generated throughout the EU.
“The potential savings in this area are huge: New regulations on the use of more efficient motors are expected to result in annual savings of around 110 TWh by 2030, equivalent to the current electricity consumption of the Netherlands. This is expected to avoid 40 million tons of CO2 emissions annually.
“Through drives, subsystems or intelligent conveyor concepts, based on Interroll’s modular technology platform, system integrators and plant builders can implement customised material flow solutions that combine cost-effectiveness and sustainability in the best possible way. This applies to retrofit projects as well as new installations.”
