Real-time delivery tracking added to major Scottish distribution contract

CJ Lang goes live with TranSend ePOD to provide real-time delivery tracking and a tailored delivery service to 300 SPAR stores in Scotland.

CJ Lang & Son, Scotland's largest independent retailing and distribution company, has implemented TranSend ePOD software to provide its customers with accurate, real-time information on delivery status. By using intelligent workflow to automatically manage the differing delivery requirements of individual stores and products types, drivers can be sure to follow customer-specific instructions and reduce turnaround time at stops.

CJ Lang has deployed the TranSend app on Zebra TC56 rugged devices. Step-by-step, detailed instructions are displayed to the driver, tailored to each drop. This removes the complex paper process previously required to manage the distribution of fresh, frozen and ambient products as well as secure products such as alcohol and cigarettes, resulting in increased productivity for drivers and increased accuracy in delivery data. This, in turn, ensures more accurate invoicing and reduces customer claims.

All data captured by the driver is automatically fed to the back office, where any discrepancies are immediately flagged and can be promptly dealt with by the customer services team – such as shortages, damages, and variation from temperature tolerances – without the need to distract the driver.

The TranSend ePOD app start-of-day process includes vehicle checks and defect management, compliant with DVSA and FORS requirements.

Graham Murdoch, IT director at CJ Lang, comments: “We are renowned for our excellent customer service, delivering six days a week to SPAR stores across the length and breadth of Scotland. TranSend will ensure that we make the most efficient use of our drivers and vehicles and provide our customers with a tailored delivery service. Fast and secure data captured from the driver’s device and the wider availability of real-time delivery information means that our customers can be fully informed of delivery status at any time and any queries can be quickly resolved. Integration with our back-office system means more timely and accurate billing which, in turn, reduces customer claims and improve cash flow.”

Having just celebrated its centenary year, CJ Lang & Son has been based in Dundee since 1919 and provides an essential service to over 300 SPAR member stores to all out-reaches of Scotland, combining product sourcing, warehousing, distribution and support services.
