Tensile buildings rapidly gaining popularity

You may have read about tensile buildings before. They’re rapidly gaining popularity in handling and storage, after all. Why? There are three simple reasons. But before we get into that, let’s start by dispelling one myth right now: Tensile does not automatically mean temporary. Now, let’s get on to the rest.

Reason 1: They’re Cost-Effective

Costs of land and labour are increasing, and with them, the bottom line for any warehouse investment projects. A tensile building is one way to keep your expenditure down.

Make no mistake, it’s by no means the ‘cheap’ option. Choosing tensile doesn’t mean you’re getting a bargain-basement building that’ll end up costing a fortune in upkeep. Tensile just costs less to build and maintain than a traditional building does—and there’s no need to compromise on durability or design.

How? See below.

Reason 2: They Use Less Materials

Tensile uses a steel frame wrapped with a heavy-duty fabric membrane. Because steel has a high strength-to-weight ratio, you don’t need as much of it for the building frame, which reduces costs.

And because you’re using less steel, the frame is lighter in weight, which cuts down on groundworks needed to fix the facility in place.

Less groundworks means less time on site, and a quicker build—both of which also reduce the bottom line.

Their geometric arrangement makes tensile buildings just as strong as traditional buildings, but their steel and fabric structure actually makes them more versatile in size and shape.

Plus, tensile buildings can be clear span up to 100 metres, for any racking or handling equipment you need inside.

Reason 3: They’re Sustainable

That membrane we mentioned earlier gives tensile facilities a near-transparent roof. Instead of boxy and opaque brickwork, you have a naturally-lit and ambient internal environment.

It’s more pleasant for occupiers and more energy-efficient—who needs electric lighting during the day, when you’re using daylight instead?

There’s also the option to add a second membrane ‘skin’, which increases facility insulation, or to integrate heating and ventilation systems to suit your facility use.
