New online awareness course for everyone working around forklifts

26 October 2022

LEADING WORKPLACE transport training provider Mentor Training has launched its new online Forklift Awareness course to protect everyone working around forklift trucks, including those most at risk of injury, colleagues on foot.

Recent RIDDOR statistics show that a huge proportion of incidents involving a forklift truck were impacts with a third person, accounting for 43% of the total.* This is often pedestrians working nearby, supervisors and delivery drivers.

“Our Forklift Awareness course is as much for those who work in the vicinity of forklifts as for operators, as their colleagues may not understand the dangers, but they are in fact the ones most likely to be injured in an accident,” said Mentor FLT Training commercial director Adam Smith.

“Unlike a basic forklift operator training course, Forklift Awareness highlights the risks and the consequences of unsafe practice and targets the behaviour at its root, combatting lack of understanding, complacency, bad habits and risk fatigue. It reminds delegates of the serious consequences of forklift accidents and why it is essential to stay alert at all times.”

Mentor’s industry-approved Forklift Awareness course is available online, allowing delegates to undergo their training at a time and place convenient to them, and takes less than 1 hour to complete - making it ideal for inductions or periodic reminders. The course is broken down into four manageable modules, with summaries and quizzes throughout to encourage engagement and confirm understanding.

“This course is hard-hitting,” adds Adam. “It contains engaging video, including dramatisations, and real-life CCTV footage. Ultimately, we want delegates to come away from this course understanding why they need to take forklift safety seriously and ready to play their part in reducing risk. Operators are given a sharp reminder why forklift safety fundamentals are so important, and pedestrians, who may otherwise have been omitted from forklift-specific training, are equipped help to keep themselves and their colleagues out of harm’s way.”

Adam summarises, “As always, the goal is to reduce the risk of accidents and serious injuries as far we can – this course has been designed to ensure everyone working around forklifts is as prepared as possible.”
